Publication of “Outstanding Cases of Gender Equality Officers in Science and Technology 2025”

The Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), chaired by Moon Ae-ri, announced on the 1st that it has published the “2025 Best Practices of Gender Equality Officers in Science and Technology”, a collection featuring exemplary cases from institutions that have successfully implemented the Gender Equality Officer system.

The Gender Equality Officer system designates staff members at public research institutions and national universities to serve as officers responsible for promoting the recruitment and advancement of women in science and technology, as well as for supporting the creation of work–life balance in research culture.

Currently, 451 Gender Equality Officers are active across 147 research institutes, public organizations, and universities in the science and technology sector. Since the system’s implementation, a total of 866 officers have participated, contributing to the professional growth of women scientists and the development of an inclusive research culture.

WISET published this casebook to share the activities of officers across institutions and to identify and disseminate best practices that can lead to more tangible outcomes.

The casebook highlights outstanding examples from five organizations:

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI)

  • K-water Research Institute (Korea Water Resources Corporation)

  • Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS)

  • Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI)

  • National Security Research Institute (NSR)

Key initiatives include:

  • Operating a research guidance program for nurturing next-generation aerospace talent (KARI)

  • Implementing a mentorship program for new employees’ organizational adaptation (K-water Research Institute)

  • Establishing a new infant class in the in-house daycare center (KRISS)

  • Running a recruitment advisory committee (KRRI)

  • Launching the W-Pass program to expand female scientist recruitment ratios (NSR)

WISET stated that it will continue to promote communication directly with research sites through the Gender Equality Officer system, supporting the creation of a science and technology community where everyone can participate and thrive.
